Only The Essential
On April 19, 2013 Casey Gannon and I began our hike on the Mexican border and on September 6th 2013 completed a 2668 mile thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. The journey was a creative as well as physical endeavor. We captured the western wilderness through photography and video with the intent of producing a film that would capture the emotion and beauty of the trail. Stay tuned for the release of our documentary "Only The Essentials".

The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) spans 2,650 miles as it traverses the mountainous spine of California, Oregon and Washington. The Pacific Crest Trail was officially finished in 1993, and crosses 26 National Forests, 7 National Parks, 5 State Parks and 3 National Monuments. It typically takes through-hikers around five months to hike the entire trail.

"Only The Essentials": Documentary Film
We are producing a documentary about our journey. Inspiration came from the Henry David Thoreau quote "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” For us “Only the Essentials” represents the idea of simplifying our modern lives, immersing ourselves in the subtler wisdom of the wild, and carrying “only the essentials” we needed to hike from the Mexican to the Canadian border on the PCT.
During the approximate five months we were on the trail we shot video and photos and journaled on a daily basis. The documentary will include interviews on the trail, footage of those we met along the way, moments of beauty, and our personal notes and reflections. We shot on two cutting edge compact HD cameras: the Sony RX100 and GoPro Hero3. “Only the Essentials” will reflect the ebb and flow of the hike and serve as a window for the viewer to experience hiking on the PCT. Growing up in an increasingly indoor world where children suffer from what has been described as “nature deficit disorder”, at an early age we experienced the consequences of being sucked into a vacuum of consumerism, TV and computers. Our mission is to document the value of connecting with nature and the evolution we expieranced during five months of immersion in the wild. We plan to spread our positive message to others by screening “Only the Essentials” in Vermont and entering the film in local and outdoor film festivals.
Prior to our hike we raised funds through Kickstarter (a funding platform for creative projects. We would like to extend our thanks toward all of the supporters who backed our project.
